Ruggero Romano is an award-winning Italian film director, producer and speaker currently based out of Venice, Italy.

Originally from Torino, Ruggero moved to Vancouver in 2016, where he graduated from Vancouver Film School and began his journey in filmmaking for social impact. During his time in Vancouver, he worked as a dishwasher and salesman while simultaneously producing and directing independent documentaries in collaboration with Indigenous and marginalized communities across British Columbia.

Motivated by the stark social inequalities in his new city, he set out to amplify the voices of the homeless community in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. His debut feature documentary, V6A, was created to challenge the stigma surrounding homelessness, addiction, and mental health. This project sparked his first impact campaign, where he discovered the power of film to drive social change.

Since then, he has consistently produced and directed a diverse range of documentaries, along with films centered on dance, music, and performance.

Through his organization Movies Move Us, he continues to explore new ways of creating and sharing socially engaged cinema—most recently with Cielo Aperto, unveiled at the 79th Mostra del Cinema di Venezia, which launched and pioneered the innovative distribution model Cinema Sospeso.

In Venice, Ruggero leads Cinelaboratorio, a community-driven project that engages local youth through hands-on workshops in acting and filmmaking, culminating in the production of an original short film created with and by the community.

He loves Afro-Cuban percussions, mountaineering, capoeira, and is always happy to support filmmakers in their journeys through Movies Move Us’ free platform and initiatives.

He also has a very sharp nose.
